five o’clock
During my two month "into the fields" residency at Libken Denk- und Produktionsort funded by Culture Moves Europe, I became very enamored by the bee hives living on the property. I started a daily afternoon practice of dancing with the hives. To dance with bees, one must move slow, assured, and not forget to breathe.
I recorded my practice a few times on my camera. With one of the recordings, I decided to reverse the video. I found it fascinating that although it is obvious I am moving backwards… if you were to just look at the bees in the video, you could not tell that the video had been reversed. The bees, to me, became a sculptural example of how time functions at the cellular level. In the video, the bees and I are sharing space, but inhabiting our own temporalities.
five o’clock premiered as a video installation at the After/Time Gallery in Portland, Oregon. As a part of a group show called uncertainty surrounds the holding of things curated by olivia miller + bella feinstein.
